Plant Maintenance

The maintenance required in the plants to run the machine regularly and to keep the types of equipment safe is known as plant maintenance. So, it is important to know about the maintenance.

Maintenance is an art of engineering that is developed in a manufacturing organization to keep the plant physically in good operating condition so that the production will not be affected by to failure of the plant, machines, or structures.

Maintenance of machinery means its upkeep and repair in the event of breakdown. It also includes the renewal and replacement of damaged parts. That’s why the time-to-time maintenance of a machine is essential to ensure the proper working of the machine and the accuracy of its types of equipment.

Maintenance is also required for the machine that is in idle condition because keeping the machine for a long time makes it rusty, corrosion and jamming of parts. So, it is clear that maintenance is essential in both working and idle conditions. The complexity of the machine and equipment increases with the modernization of an industry. Hence, in this chapter, we are going to discuss the maintenance of machines and their importance in the plant or industries.

Maintenance for Idle Condition

Maintenance for idle condition means the maintenance which is done for keeping the machine in idle or non-working condition for a long period of time.

To keep the machine safely in non-working condition, the following steps should be followed.

(i) Remove the oil from the gearbox and other parts.

(ii) After removing the oil, clean them with the help of flushing oil.

(iii) Excess oil, grease, etc., should be removed from the machine parts, and dust and metal chips should also be removed.

(iv) The electrical connections should be disconnected.

(v) Paint should be done on the parts from where the paint is removed.

(vi) Oil or grease should be applied on an important part or surface. (vi) Remove the hydraulic oil, if present in the machine.

(vi) If the machine is air compressed then its air should be removed.

(vii) Cover the machine to protect it from dust and moisture.
