Gauges and Templates

Gauges and templates are used in the modern era to make any part interchangeable and to increase mass production. Due to every time adjustment, it is impossible to take accurate readings, and making parts interchangeable takes too much time. Therefore, for mass production to make it interchangeable gauges and templates are invented.

A gauge is a device, that is used to measure or compare a job to control the size during or after the process of manufacturing in order to establish the interchangeability.

Gauges perform an essential service in any scheme of quality production on an interchangeable basis. It is employed in the sense of an instrument that has fixed dimensions and is used to determine whether the size of some components exceeds or is less than the size of the gauge itself. Gauges play an important role in ensuring the performance and design accuracy of the given component.

Gauges are inspecting instruments, which are used to check the size of parts without scale for mass production of the job. Normally, all gauges are made up of alloy steel. Nickel steel is commonly used to serve the purpose of reducing wear and tear and avoiding oxidation.

Importance of Gauge

(i) It saves time to check the job and users user-friendly.

(ii) It requires less supervision and less rejection of the job.

(iii) It decreases the cost of production.

(iv) The obtained jobs are within the tolerance limit.

(v) Parts interchangeable can be made.

(vi) It is easy to handle and very economical.

(vii) It requires less maintenance.
