In workshops and industries, different types of heavy machines are laid down. To hold these machines tightly with their bases, the foundation devices are used. Foundation devices help the machine to run in proper condition and vibration-free. The vibration generated in the machine is transferred to the foundation base through the various types of foundation devices.
Therefore, the base where heavy machines are to be performed is known as foundation and the devices which are used to hold these machines with their base are called foundation devices.
In this chapter, we will study the various types of foundation devices and different methods of moving and relocating heavy machines and pieces of equipment.
Climbing and Sliding Foundation Devices
There are different types of foundation devices, which are used to lift or slide heavy machines or objects. They help in reducing the human efforts to perform the task efficiently and correctly. Some of these devices are as follows.
1. Jack
Jack is a simple device, which is used to lift the job up to a small height. The main two types of jacks are used to lift the job, which are as follows.
(i) Screw Jack
It is used to lift the object vertically at a fixed height such as in the case of lifting the body of a bus, truck, car, etc. Its body is made up of cast iron and screw from steel.
A lever arm is provided to rotate the screw, which results in the uplifting load. After completion of work, it is rotated in the opposite direction to obtain the original position of the screw jack and unload the load.
