Joints or Fastening

We know that a machine has different parts and every part consists of many substances that are related to each other. In these parts, some parts can be permanently fixed while some parts are temporary because they need to open and close so that we can use many types of joints.

Joint or fastening is a process used for holding together two parts of a machine or a structure whether temporary or permanent. It also helps to disassemble the parts as per the requirement. All the techniques or tools are used to assemble the mechanical parts with each other which are called fasteners or joints.

In this chapter, we will study the joints or fastening, their types and components, etc.

Joints or fastening are discussed under three categories, which are as follows.

  1. Temporary fastening
  2. Semi-permanent fastening
  3. Permanent fastening

Temporary Fastening

All fastening methods are used to assemble or open the different mechanical parts without any damage. These are called temporary joints or fastening eg, Nuts and bolts, keys, screws, pins, etc. Some components are used for temporary fastening or joints, which are as follows.

1. Bolt

The temporary fastener is frequently used in the engineering industry. The bolt is cylindrical in shape and has a cutting pitch at the edges, which is used to fit a nut. A head is forged at another head, which is used to hold tightly by the operator for fitting.
